Overview#

HapticGen Editing Elements provides UI/UX components for the HapticGen interface to visualize and edit generated haptic waveforms for Meta Quest controllers. The interface allows designers to implement direct manipulation features to fine-tune waveform characteristics with real-time feedback. Users can zoom and pan around the waveform, select and modify specific regions by adjusting amplitude with fade in/out options, and cut, copy, paste, or delete selected slices. The interface supports applying various filters with customizable parameters, undo/redo functionality, and saving modified waveforms locally as .wav files.

Why#

Haptic feedback systems offer novel ways to interact with digital environments, particularly in augmented and virtual reality settings. Traditionally, designing haptic feedback patterns has been a complex and specialized process. Emerging technologies like generative AI systems, such as HapticGen, can streamline this process by generating haptic feedback patterns from user input prompts. Before, tweaking a waveform meant exporting your signal, opening it in an audio editor to trim, filter, or boost levels, then saving, re-importing, and uploading to your device. Introducing UI/UX elements that allow designers to visualize, edit, and adapt the generated waveforms in real-time improves workflow efficiency and creative control. By eliminating all the extra steps needed, haptic designers can spend less time and energy iterating their waveforms and more time crafting immersive haptic experiences.
